About Us

The History of Dannemiller

Dannemiller began in 1984 as the Dannemiller Memorial Educational Foundation in San Antonio, Texas, where it remains today.

The Anesthesiology Refresher Course Lectures, the genesis of the Dannemiller Foundation's Anesthesiology Review Course, began in 1953 when Dr. Arthur B. Tarrow moved to prepare Air Force anesthesiologists for the board exams. In 1970, Dr. Joseph Dannemiller, our namesake, was informed that the Air Force could no longer continue supporting this event. Dr. Dannemiller then founded the Society of Air Force Anesthesiologists to ensure the continuation of this important educational meeting. The Dannemiller Memorial Educational Foundation was formed in his memory in 1984. In 2009, the company changed its name to Dannemiller, Inc.

Dannemiller has grown to become a leader in continuing education and has been an accredited educational provider by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for over 30 years. In the latest survey by the ACCME, Dannemiller was awarded Accreditation with Commendation, the highest honor of accreditation by the ACCME, and that status as a provider was extended through 2016.

Dannemiller is now a jointly accredited provider with Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing EducationTM, approved to provide continuing education accreditation through Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), American Academy of Physician Associates (AAPA), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).  Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing EducationTM is the first and only process in the world offering this benefit.  This innovation promotes interprofessional continuing education (IPCE) that leads to improved health care delivery and better patient outcomes.

Dannemiller is comprised of: doctors (MDs, DOs, PhDs, and PharmDs), nurses (NPs, RNs, PhDs, & CRNAs), JDs, educators, instructional designers, continuing education accreditors, publishers, editors, meeting planners and coordinators, and a comprehensive IT and audio/visual support team.

With roots in Anesthesiology and Pain Management, Dannemiller continues to expand its offering to a wide range of specialties in the medical and supporting communities. Although Dannemiller is widely known for its own continuing medical education (CME) activities, namely our Anesthesiology and Pain Review Courses, we also partner with other educational entities to provide credit for a combined total of more than 250 medical education programs and over 90,000 credit hours in a broad range of subject-matter each year.

We are proud to offer these programs in a variety of educational modalities such as live, print, and interactive online formats. Program evaluations document that over 95% of Dannemiller CME activity participants learn something they will incorporate into their profession, meaning that we are hugely successful in producing positive results among activities intended to improve participants’ competence in their profession.

Our Legacy

FRANCIS JOSEPH DANNEMILLER, M.D.
FRANCIS JOSEPH DANNEMILLER, M.D.March 31, 1931 - April 30, 1983

Doctor Dannemiller, born in Akron, Ohio, was a graduate of Holy Cross College in 1953 and Yale University School of Medicine in 1957. He served in internship at Philadelphia General Hospital and completed his residency training in anesthesiology at Yale University School of Medicine in 1961. He entered active duty with the U.S. Air Force in 1961, as Chief, Anesthesiology Service, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, until 1963. He was assigned as Chief, Anesthesiology Service, Clark Air Force Base, in the Philippines and actively involved in the Viet Nam conflict until 1966. From this experience, he subsequently wrote a Chapter on Anesthetic Management of Casualties for the NATO War Manual, published in 1973. He was assigned to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, again as Chief, Anesthesiology Service, from 1966 until 1970, during which time he completed a Fellowship in Anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi, in 1968. Dr. Dannemiller was assigned as Chairman and Director, Anesthesiology Residency Training Program, Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in 1970. He encouraged and stimulated an interest in research by his own involvement which resulted in numerous protocols and subsequent publications.

At the time of his death, Dr. Dannemiller was President of the San Antonio Society of Anesthesiologists and held an appointment as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. He recently served as Program Chairman for the Annual Meeting (1983) of the American Society of Regional Anesthesia which was held in Orlando, Florida, in March. He had been a member of the Launch Medical Team for the Gemini and Apollo space programs; Consultant in Anesthesiology to the USAF Surgeon General, and served as an examiner for the American College of Anesthesiologists. He formerly served as Chairman to the ASA Defense and Military Affairs Committee; as a member of the Committee on Medical Education for National Defense, the Z-79 Committee, National Standards Institute Organization; the U.S. Air Force Representative to the International Standards Organization, and served as past-president of the Military Society of Anesthesiologists

Dr. Dannemiller 's strong and abiding interest in the education of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists was evident throughout his career. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1979, he went into the private practice of Anesthesiology and Pain. In spite of a heavy commitment to his practice, he spent the majority of his limited free time presenting lectures and workshops, and developing and editing AnesthesiaFile. He took every opportunity to acquire new skills and techniques which would promote patient care and further the knowledge of those involved in anesthesiology, postoperative care, and intensive care.

The Society of Air Force Anesthesiologists was founded by Dr. Dannemiller in 1971. The Anesthesiology Refresher Course Lectures were begun in 1953, by Dr. Arthur B. Tarrow, Chairman, Department of Anesthesiology at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, as a preparation for exams held by the American College of Anesthesiologists and the American Board of Anesthesiologists. The Lectures were held each year in the Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center auditorium with audio-visual support and coffee provided by the Medical Center. However, in 1970, Dr. Dannemiller was informed that this support could not continue, and the Society of Air Force Anesthesiologists was founded, at his own expense, as a separate entity. In order to continue to offer this excellent review to the growing number of military and civilian physicians and nurses entering the field of Anesthesiology, the meeting was moved to the San Antonio Convention Center. As each meeting ended, he was challenged by the prospect of planning the program for the following year and he looked forward to each annual meeting with great enthusiasm.

His dedication to medicine and his devotion to teaching others in both the art and science of anesthesiology was an inspiration to all who knew him. He often commented that his primary goal was not to attempt to provide all anesthesia knowledge, but to motivate others to learn what they did not know and had a need to know. This remains the philosophy of his educational society.
