Introduction to Clinical Ultrasound in the Emergency Department

Intended Audience

This course is intended for advanced practice providers and physicians who work in the acute care setting including the Emergency Department.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Explain the basic ultrasonography principles and knobology.
  • Explain the indications, findings and limitations in using ultrasound on the trauma patient.
  • Demonstrate the proper technique and positions to evaluate for abdominal, thoracic and pericardial-free fluid. Develop competence in the EFAST exam used at the bedside.
  • Demonstrate the use of ultrasound to assist in the evaluation of a pneumothorax, pulseless electrical activity (PEA) and cardiac tamponade.
  • Demonstrate the use of ultrasound for peripheral and central IV access as well as simple procedures such as abscess drainage.

Method of Participation

This program consists of lectures, enhanced by slide presentations, as well as hands-on practice. The course sessions will provide an update of current pain management practices. This program offers ample opportunity for the participants to interact one-on-one with the faculty throughout the conference.
